Places to Break Up

February 14th, 2008 by Nita

Places to Break Up
by Anita S. Nixon

When you don’t want to be stuck with that person come Valentine’s Day.

On Myspace or via text message- A simple, “It’s over” will do. If you’re that much of a jerk to text-a-break-up, then you probably don’t need much of an explanation.

On the phone- When things start to get heated, just pretend that your call dropped… “Uh..Can you hear me now??”

Not at your house, preferably in a public place- You’ve seen “Two Can Play That Game”. Don’t break up with some one at your house, especially if that person is a looney tune. Things may get thrown, and screaming and hollering will insue. Who knows you may even end up tied up in a closet. Break up with someone in public, with plenty of witnesses.

At the club- The loud music will make it hard to explain yourself, making the break up short and to the point. And don’t forget the quick rebound!

At a Restaurant - A public place, but still private enough to have that final conversation. How angry can that person get, you’ve just bought them a free meal, plus they can drown their sorrows at the bar.

The 50th Annual Grammy Awards

February 11th, 2008 by Nita

The 50th Annual Grammy Awards

Kanye West
The writer’s strike is officially over and the long awaited 50th Annual Grammy Awards aired last night on CBS. The show opened with a Frank Sinatra and Alicia Keys duet, signifying the show’s theme of commemorating the past and embracing the future. Sinatra appeared via video while Alicia Keys sang live in a stunning emerald green gown. The Grammy’s were jam packed with performances from today’s rising stars and those who paved the way for them. Jimmy Jam reunited with The Time who later performed alongside Rihanna. The cast members of ‘Love’ performed to the music of the legendary Beatles, featuring a powerful rendition of “Let It Be”, by a young Timothy T. Mitchum and choir. Amy Winehouse was awarded best new artist of the year, accepted on her behalf by Cindi Lauper and new comer Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana. She would be performing later on that night, live via satellite from London.

Kanye West and Daft Punk’s performance of Stronger was definitely a nod toward the future, who appeared only as a silhouette with his signature shades illuminated against the dark space-themed stage. West also performed “Hey Mama”, an ode to his mother who sadly passed earlier this year. The highly anticipated Beyonce and Tina Turner performance did not disappoint. Beyonce opened by name dropping some of the mot influential song birds of the past, before introducing a stunning Tina Turner who looked not a day over 30 in a skin tight metallic outfit. The duo performed a dynamic and energetic “Proud Mary (Rolling Down the River)”. Alicia Keys performed her smash hit No One, accompanied by John Mayer on the guitar. Mayer also appears on her latest album, “As I Am” released late last year. Amy Winehouse’s performance was one of her best. Accompanied by three backup singers and a band, Winehouse performed “You Know I’m No Good” and smash hit, “Rehab”. It was from this stage that she accepted her award for Best New Artist. Other notable moments, included Kanye West’s emotional acceptance speech, in which the artist known for always saying what’s on his mind, demanded extra time as he dedicated his award to his mother. “It would be in good taste to stop the music…,” West exclaimed as the audience clapped in agreement.

By the end of night Amy Winehouse took home 5 awards, Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year for “Rehab” and Kanye West took home four including Best Album of the Year for “Graduation”. Check out Grammy.com for a complete list of winners and performers. Here’s to the next 50 years of great music.

Nas @ The Hammerstein Ballroom

December 28th, 2007 by Nita

NasNas @ The Hammerstein Ballroom

December 28, 2007

Only the biggest Hip Hop heads were in attendance at the Nas concert at the Hammerstein, this past Wednesday night. Even as it started to hail outside the venue, diehard Nas fans remained as amped up as ever. Nas, who has been in the game for over fifteen years, has always been known for his complex lyrics and smooth flow. He has been recognized for being a true Hip Hop artist, which is rare in a world of “ringtone music”, as HOT 97’s Mr. Cee pointed out at the concert. After playfully kicking HOT 97 mixer, DJ Juanito off the stage for playing Soulja Boy, “The Finisher” commenced into playing the hottest hip hop tracks- throwback at noon style. Finally Nas graced the stage wearing a crisp white tee, with the words “Peace is my Religion” across the front. His gold dookie chain was massive with a canary diamond encrusted Egyptian head pendant. The rapper performed his hits, including classics from his acclaimed first album Illmatic. Legendary producer Marley Marl, was the DJ of the night and was accompanied by a live band. Nas brought Def Jam songbird Chrisette Michelle to perform, “Can’t Forget About You” from his most recent album “Hip Hop is Dead”. Chrisette sounded flawless as she sported a new cropped ‘do. The Bravehearts who haven’t performed together in over ten years performed “Oochie Wally”. Surprise guest, Busta Rhymes appeared towards the end of the concert, in a interesting belted white fur coat, of course sporting his myriad of heavily encrusted jewelry. He performed “New York Sh*t” and “Put Your Hands Where the Eyes Can See” after which he made sure to let the audience know that Nas was indeed, the king of

New York. The night concluded with Nas performing street anthem “Made You Look”. Nas never fails to bring the heat when he’s on stage, and one can only wait for his next controversially titled album to be released next year.

Up Close and Personal Tour with Chris Brown and Bow Wow

Up Close and Personal Tour with Chris Brown

December 19, 2007

My best friend and I went to the Up Close and Personal tour at Madison Square Garden last Friday. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a Chris Brown fan, so needless to say I was excited. Contrary to the title of tour we weren’t so up close and personal, but we had a good time nonetheless. We thought we would be the oldest people in the audience, which featured artists like Bow Wow and Chris Brown, but it’s quite obvious that their fan base has grown up just like these superstars. Don’t get it twisted; there were plenty of tweens in the building, acting like they were grown! The tour opened up with Sean Kingston, Soulja Boy and the Shop Boys all who had big hits this year. Mr. Ay Bay Bay aka Hurricane Chris made a guest appearance during Soulja Boy’s set. Bow Wow’s entrance was elaborate with a video clip that took place on a private jet. A miniature replica of a jet landed on stage with the star inside. He performed his newest songs and even hits made when he still had the Lil’ in front of his name. Bow brought guests Swizz Beatz, Fabolous and of course Omarion. The two performed their new single “Girlfriend” off their new album Face Off. Next up was R&B sweetheart, Chris Brown who had a big year, with his new album Exclusive which released in November.  Brown never disappoints his audience with his elaborate dance moves and stage set. The artists and his dancers were lowered to the stage Mission Impossible style. The highlights of his performance included when Brown broke into some 80s b-boy moves bringing out rap legend, LL Cool J to perform “Radio”. The best performance of the night was Brown’s rendition of Rihanna’s Umbrella, in which he appears on the remix. Rihanna appeared on a hologram singing her verse as Chris danced accompanied with an umbrella. The song ended with pyrotechnics raining down just like in the video. The set changed again, to a school scene as the DJ played the “Saved by the Bell” theme song. Brown then segued into his hit song featuring the holo-T-Pain, “Kiss Kiss”, marking the end of the concert. Overall, neither me or my friend were disappointed, the concert was entertaining from start to finish and is clear that both Chris Brown and Bow Wow will continue to bring us hits for years to come.

Surviving the Holidays

December 23rd, 2007 by Nita

Surviving the Holidays
by Anita S. Nixon

  1. Be proactive this year. Instead of being upset about your sucky gifts, drop hints as often as possible. Try bringing it up at the dinner table or stand in front of the TV- do what ever it takes to maximize your holiday.
  2. If you’re at a loss and have no idea what to get your lost ones, steer clear of the socks and underwear aisle. I mean really.
  3. Save your Christmas shopping until the day after Christmas. You’ll get the best deals plus they’ll make perfect Kwanzaa gifts.
  4. If you do end up with a wack gift, don’t fret. Wrap it back up and give it away. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
  5. The holidays can be a stressful time of year. Take it easy, enjoy a sip of egg-nog and remember, it’ll all be over, January 2 nd .

Thanksgiving Tips

November 24th, 2007 by Nita

Get where you’re going early, so that you can stake your claim on the sweet potato pie and other goodies. Don’t forget to find the perfect spot in front of the TV for when the game comes on.

•  Wear clothes with elastic. The fewer set backs the better.

•  If you’re a vegetarian, just stay home. Yes, everything has pork in it and no, we will not cook you a turkey-less turkey.

•  Lay everything about your family on the table, before bringing your significant other to dinner. You might want to let him/her know that your uncle Joe can get frisky when drunk, your mom is going to want to know when you are getting married and that your cousin Bubba will try to sell her used car parts for cheap.

•  Thanksgiving is not the time to announce bad news, like, “Hey Mom, I’m flunking out of college” or “Hey Mom, while I was flunking out of school, I got pregnant…surprise?!?”. Yea, you might want to save that for Christmas.

American Music Awards 2007

November 21st, 2007 by Nita

The 2007 American Music Awards aired last night on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel hosted for the fourth year in a row; however instead of doing his usually comedy shtick, due to the writer’s guild strike, Kimmel decided to show off his pitiful dance moves. After dragging American Idol winner Jordin Sparks and season 4 Idol contestant Kellie Pickler, to the stage, the trio did a horrible rendition of the Crank Dat Soulja Boy dance, with Soulja Boy there to supervise. This year for the first time the fans got to vote for their favorite artists online and the winners were selected on air last night. Akon walked away with Favorite Soul and R&B Male Artist, while Rihanna, known for her pop and dance hits walked away the winner in the female category. The artist seemed confused as to why she was even nominated for this category and gave props to the other ladies nominated like Alicia Keys. Speaking of the songstress, Keys had the best performance of the night, performing her roaring hot single, No One. The stage was decked out in a summer beach party theme, and Junior Reid came to the stage to sing the reggae remix. Chaka Demus and Pliers also graced the stage with throwback song, Murder She Wrote and Beenie Man, dressed from head to toe in a white ensemble performed Girls Dem Suga. Alicia Keys also surprised fans when she broke into some cute dance moves, which was a nice change for the star who’s often seen behind a piano. Chris Brown’s performance was also memorable, although it did not top his performance at the MTV Music Awards. Brown performed song Kiss Kiss with T-Pain while pulling off his signature acrobatic dance moves, glow in the dark style. Beyonce was presented with the International Artist Award by a stumbling Usher, who just couldn’t seem to get his lines together. Beyonce showcased just how versatile she is by singing a country version Irreplaceable. Other winners included rapper T.I., who was awarded with favorite Rap/Hip Hop male artist and album. Bone Thugs N Harmony walked away with best Duo. Justin Timberlake, who had a big year with hit after hit, walked away with the most awards including, favorite Soul/R&B album and favorite Pop/Rock artist. Mary J. Blige, Rihanna and Ne-Yo and Will.i.am and Nicole Scherzinger also took the stage. British rock stars Duran Duran closed the show performing songs chosen by fans.
